Dang My Linh is a Vietnamese-American digital artist who specializes in photorealistic fantasy-themed portraits. Her work has been featured in art shows in Tokyo, and her piece SNOW (2017) won in a character design contest held by her drawing program. Along with being a freelance artist, Dang is a graphic designer and creates concept art for games.
What draws me in most about Dang's artwork is the use of color. The slight use of warm colors in cooler pieces and of cool colors in warmer pieces is extremely pleasing to the eye. In all of her work, it is very clear that a lot of effort went into picking out which colors to use. I also adore the rendering. Even though photorealism is not what I'm going for with my work, I love to render my semi-realistic and stylized pieces and to mess around with color that way. I decided to look more into Dang's profile because of how flawless the rendering looks in her artwork. Looking closely, I can tell that the different tones in the face come from layering tones on top of each other and blending them. I've derived from this that the key to smooth, aesthetically pleasing rendering is both blending and use of a diverse set of tones.
The only critique I have regarding Dang's work is that the subject matter in most of her paintings is very similar. With such gorgeous, professional-looking artwork, it would be so interesting to see what other animals or objects would look like in her style aside from humanoids alone. I might try to reach out and ask about commission prices if I can save up the money.
